D. GREGORY VALENZA D. Gregory Valenza is the managing partner of Shaw Valenza LLP. Greg is resident in the Firm’s San Francisco office. He practices in all areas of labor and employment law and devotes most of his practice to counseling employers, employment litigation and appeals. After graduating from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration in 1985, Greg worked in hotel and restaurant management and consulting before entering law school. He graduated from New York Law School first in his class and received his Juris Doctor summa cum laude. While at New York Law School, Mr. Valenza was an articles editor of the Law Review, and received several awards, including moot court honors. Greg serves as a mediator for the San Francisco Bar Association’s Early Settlement Program. He is a former member, Vice-Chair and Co-Chair of the California State Bar’s Committee on Legal Professionals with Disabilities. Greg speaks regularly on a variety of employment law topics. He has authored and co-authored many articles on employment law, and has been quoted in numerous publications. Before joining Shaw Valenza LLP, Greg spent 14 years with Jackson Lewis LLP, working in the San Francisco and Sacramento offices. Jackson Lewis promoted Greg to partner in 2000 and to managing partner of the firm’s San Francisco office in 2002.
JENNIFER BROWN SHAW Jennifer’s practice at Shaw Valenza LLP includes providing regular advice and counsel on workplace issues to numerous private and public sector employers. She also develops and presents seminars for management and non-supervisory employees on subjects such as respect and professionalism in the workplace, AB 1825 compliance, AB 1234 compliance, diversity, managing protected leaves of absence, and workplace violence prevention. In addition, Jennifer regularly conducts independent internal investigations for employers. Jennifer is an active member of the California State and Sacramento County Bar Associations, and the Society for Human Resource Management (“SHRM”). She is a member of the Legal and Legislative Group of the Sacramento Area Human Resources Association, and co-authors a regular column on workplace law issues for The Daily Recorder, a legal newspaper. Jennifer is a frequent speaker on employment law topics, and she has been a guest on CNN and local television and radio programs. Jennifer graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz in 1988, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with honors. She received her law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1994, where she graduated magna cum laude and was the editor-in-chief of the law review. Prior to founding Shaw Valenza LLP, Jennifer was a partner at Jackson Lewis LLP. Previously, she practiced employment law as an associate at Schacter, Kristoff, Orenstein & Berkowitz (1997-2000) and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (1994-1997).
CAROLYN G. BURNETTE Carolyn is a partner at Shaw Valenza LLP, based at our Sacramento office. Carolyn obtained her law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law in 1997 where she received American Jurisprudence Awards for Trial Advocacy, and Negotiations and Settlements. Carolyn also obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in business/marketing from San Francisco State University. Carolyn externed at the United States District Court, Northern District, for the Honorable Magistrate Judge Bernard Zimmerman. Prior to receiving her law degree, Carolyn obtained over ten years of business experience in private industry. This corporate background gives Carolyn a unique advantage when litigating for employers, and allows Carolyn to effectively grasp and manage practical operational issues that are central to many cases. Carolyn has represented major corporations in sizable contract negotiations. Her business experience also included managing large organizations which utilized both contract and regular employees. Her duties encompassed all aspects of employee relations including hiring, training, policy enforcement, discipline, termination, and compliance with employment laws. Carolyn has practiced employment law since 1997 and brings to the firm significant federal and state court litigation experience. She previously was associated with the law firms of Jackson Lewis LLP (Sacramento) and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (Palo Alto), where she practiced exclusively in employment law. While practicing in Palo Alto, Carolyn litigated and provided advice and counsel to a variety of technology and start-up companies during the fast-paced “dot com boom.” Carolyn also practiced employment law at Seyfarth Shaw’s Sacramento office. Carolyn has authored several published articles dealing with a variety of employment law issues.
MATT NORFLEET Matt Norfleet is an associate attorney in Shaw Valenza’s San Francisco office. He has experience in wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, reasonable accommodation, and whistleblower litigation in state and federal courts. Matt has investigated sexual harassment allegations, employee misconduct, threats of workplace violence, and fraud on behalf of employers. In addition, he has conducted numerous training sessions for employees and management. Matt received a B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in 1995 and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in 2000. During law school, Matt was Managing Editor of Hastings West-Northwest Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, worked for the San Francisco City Attorney, externed for United States Magistrate Judge Joseph Spero (N.D. Cal.), and was a law clerk for the Public Defender of Marin County. After graduating from law school, Matt entered the Honors Attorney program of the Law Department of the United States Postal Service, the nation’s largest civilian employer at that time. He was later associated with the law firm of Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold, LLP in its Employment and Labor Group in San Francisco. Matt volunteers for the San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program as an advocate for minors in foster care and is an active member of Legal Services for Children’s pro bono attorney panel.
BECKI GRAHAM Becki Graham is an associate attorney in Shaw Valenza’s Sacramento office. Becki has experience in discrimination, wrongful termination and harassment litigation in state and federal court. Becki received a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2000. She graduated from Syracuse University College of Law and received her Juris Doctor cum laude in 2005. During law school, Becki was the Managing Editor of the Syracuse Science & Technology Law Reporter, Associate Editor of the Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce, member of the Justinian Honorary Law Society, and an extern for the Honorable Fredrick J. Scullin, Jr., Chief District Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. Before joining Shaw Valenza, Becki worked as an associate attorney at Porter, Scott, Weiberg & Delehant in Sacramento. Her practice at Porter Scott focused on employment litigation in state and federal court.
SHANE ANDERIES Shane K. Anderies is an associate in Shaw Valenza's San Francisco office. Shane provides training, advice, and counsel to public and private sector employers on subjects ranging from harassment, discrimination, and retaliation prevention; to respect and professionalism in the workplace; diversity; wage and hour compliance; and managing protected leaves of absence. He represents employers in litigation before federal, state, and local courts and administrative agencies. Shane graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1998 (B.A.) summa cum laude. He received his law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2001, where he was the comments editor of the Law Review. He was a judicial extern for the Honorable John E. Munter of the San Francisco Superior Court. He has authored several articles on various employment law topics, including a comment on employment arbitration published in the University of San Francisco School of Law’s Law Review and cited in B.E. Witkin’s California Procedure, 4th ed. Shane is a member of The Guardsmen, a San Francisco service organization dedicated to the advancement of at-risk Bay Area youth. He is a member of the Embarcadero Chapter of Business Networking International (BNI) (for which he served as President in 2007) and the Lawyers Networking Group (LNG). Shane is also a member of the St. Thomas More Society, an organization devoted to analyzing and debating issues of public import, particularly those facing the Bay Area community. Before joining Shaw Valenza, Shane was an associate with Jackson Lewis LLP's San Francisco office, where his practice focused exclusively on employment law. |
